The old Abbey in Portumna is a favourite with kids, who love to play hide-and-seek in the many nooks of the ruins. With its stately arches, doorways and different sections, it’s a fantastic place for kids to run around and expend energy.
Next to the forest park is the Marina, which gives access to the Shannon waterway system. It’s a scenic harbour filled with pleasure boats, a short distance from where the River Shannon enters the largest of its three lakes on its journey to the Atlantic Ocean.
The Irish Workhouse Centre in Portumna gives visitors a sense of what life was like there. You can see the girls’ yard, women’s dormitory block, matron’s quarters, schoolroom and laundry building - and compare these to the deluxe boardroom, where the board of guardians who ran the workhouse held their meetings.
