We know every inch of Portumna, and know the best places for you to visit!

It’s our home town and we are passionate about introducing visitors to the highlights and hidden gems in the town itself and in the surrounding areas. We figured that the best way to see the fantastic landscape and its natural treasures is on a bike.

Dick’s Trails will suggest some routes for you to take and explore. We will update the trails during the year to include any festivals or events that we think you might like to check out.

    The seat of the De Burgo Family

    The ground floor of the castle is open to the public and houses an exhibition on the history and restoration of the building and the de Burgo family.

    The old Abbey in Portumna is a favourite with kids, who love to play hide-and-seek in the many nooks of the ruins. With its stately arches, doorways and different sections, it’s a fantastic place for kids to run around and expend energy.

    Feed the ducks while you watch the cruisers drift in to the marina…

    Next to the forest park is the Marina, which gives access to the Shannon waterway system. It’s a scenic harbour filled with pleasure boats, a short distance from where the River Shannon enters the largest of its three lakes on its journey to the Atlantic Ocean.

    Known locally as ‘the swimming area’, the Portumna Water Recreation Park is a magnet for swimmers and anyone who enjoys splashing around.

    For nature lovers, Portumna Forest Park is heaven!

    Located on the northern shore of Lough Derg, with a great range of tree-lined and lakeside trails to choose from. Why not bring a picnic as an extra treat!

  • The Irish Workhouse Centre
    The Irish Workhouse Centre, Portumna

    A fascinating insight into Portumna’s past.

    The Irish Workhouse Centre in Portumna gives visitors a sense of what life was like there. You can see the girls’ yard, women’s dormitory block, matron’s quarters, schoolroom and laundry building - and compare these to the deluxe boardroom, where the board of guardians who ran the workhouse held their meetings.

  • Portumna Bridge
    Portumna Bridge, Portumna

    Where Galway meets Tipperary

    Portumna bridge lies east of the town of Portumna, in County Galway, Ireland. It is a five-span road bridge, which carries the N65 across the River Shannon to Lehinch in County Tipperary.
